1c. Reporting Exposures to Bloodborne Pathogens

For exposures at an EHC or affiliated facility, please refer to the Occupational Health Services (OHS) website for facility-specific protocols at https://ourehc.org/departments/hr-service-center/occupational-health-services/protocols.html:

  • In general, during business hours you will be evaluated by an OHS provider
  • If an exposure occurs AFTER business hours, you may be referred to the Emergency Department in consultation with the on call OHS provider. If evaluated by the Emergency Department, you will still need to report OHS the following business day.
  • For exposures to potentially HIV infected materials, antiretroviral therapy may be recommended depending on the nature of the exposure, and the Hospital Epidemiologist will be contacted to guide treatment decisions if additional guidance is needed.

As a backup the WHSC Needlestick Hotline (404-727-4736) may be called 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and you will be directed to the appropriate location as needed.
